Cultural events

Sarlat has a very active cultural life. Throughout the year there are numerous events of quality which attract a wide ranging audience.

Art exhibitions, theatre, music, photography, cinema and traditional festivals; culture in all its forms, summer and winter alike, for the great pleasure of all.


Sarlat major annual events: 

  • Truffle Festival with its culinary symposium of foie gras and truffle: mid-January, every year
  • Walnut festival : On February 7th & 8th in 2015
  • Ringueta: Festival celebrating the traditional games of the past. Every 2 years, on Whit Sunday
  • Summer exhibition: Each year, the work of a different artist is presented. From June to September. The latest ones were painter Juan Miró in 2009, photographer Jean Loup Sieff in 2008, painter Alberto Giacometti in 2007, sculptor Michel Dauguet in 2006, sculptor Jean-Louis Toutain in 2005,  painter Miréio in 2004 and "Dali intime" in 2003
  • Fête de la Musique: National music day on the 21st June every year throughout the medieval town
  • Theatre Games Festival - One of the eldest theater festivals in France (since 1952): End of July to early August
  • National exhibition of Photographic art: In July and August
  • European Heritage Day: 3rd week-end in September. In the evening “Sarlat’s heritage beneath the stars”, for all members of the public
  • Gourmet celebration days : The second fortnight in September
  • The "Salamander" Raid (sporting event) : The first fortnight in September
  • Movie Festival: The second fortnight in November
  • Christmas Market and outdoor skating rink: in December (up to 40 wooden chalets selling arts and crafts; numerous entertainments, and a free play area for children)
  • Les Hivernales - Exhibition of works from local artists: Christmas holidays
  • The Sarlat Cutural Centre programme offers a wide range of performances. Theatre, humour, dance, music, young audience. All year long - Accessible to everyone
